If you’re struggling with acne, stress could easily be the culprit. Stress alters your hormone levels, leaving you susceptible to all kinds of skin problems.

Elevated hormone levels means more oil for our skin to grapple with. This can exacerbate existing skin problems and trigger behaviors that cause new ones.

For example, if you’re stressed you’re more likely to engage in a host of other behaviors that create skin problems. Stress can make it difficult for you to get enough sleep, for example. It can also make you want to reach for sugary or fatty foods which elevate hormone levels even more.

Southern Methodist University ran an article referencing the link between acne and stress. Author Alexa Horner offered students a host of solutions for solving the problem, including:

  • Consuming more low-fat dairy products.
  • Consuming fruits which are high in anti-oxidants, like blueberries.
  • Using a high-quality skin wash to keep your skin clean.
  • Making sure that you get enough sleep.

WebMD also warns against touching your skin too much. It’s easy to forget that your hands are roaming over your face when you’re trying to tame the tension beast, but the oils in your hands and harsh treatment from your fingernails could make a bad acne problem even worse.

Other stress management techniques may also be helpful. For example, you could practice deep breathing when the day gets too rough. When you get home, be sure to take a hot bath, or do something else that you really enjoy. Exercise has always been a great tool for dialing back the tension, too, so take 20 minutes to get in a walk or go check out a local Zumba class.
