The legend of the Fountain of Youth has been with us since the days of ancient Greece. Sadly, nobody has ever found a real one.

Still, there are things that you can do to look younger and live longer. Here are 6 ways to look, feel, and be your best.

1. Kick 3 Deadly Habits

Before you can talk about living longer you have to halt “slow suicide” behaviors — things which are actively shaving years off of your life.

That means smoking, drinking, and regular trips through the fast food line need to become a thing of the past. Philly.com reports that these behaviors can shave up to 12 years off of your life. That’s a high price to pay for an appletini or a Big Mac.

2. Exercise Regularly

Failing to exercise kills you slowly–it’s another one of those behaviors that shaves years off of your life. But choosing to exercise can add six years instead.

The exercise doesn’t all have to be tedious, either. Safe, healthy sex is just as effective as a 30 minute run, so if you have a partner you can both live longer by indulging!

3. Turn Off the Boob Tube

Watching one or two shows a week won’t kill you, but watching TV like a typical American (4 or more hours per day) just might. If you do, you’re 46% more likely to die from…well…just about anything, though heart disease is particularly likely, according to Health.com.

You can mitigate this by exercising while you watch, so bust out the stationary bike or the treadmill while you watch your favorite shows.

4. Lose the Pounds

Nobody likes hearing it, but losing weight will help you live longer. Even a 10% reduction in your weight helps your body function better.

You can probably achieve much of this weight loss by eating more fruits and vegetables and by drinking more water, two more behaviors that will help you live longer.

5. Stay Out of the Sun

Several of our previous posts have explored the link between sun damage and the signs of aging. Exposure to harmful UV rays helps promote wrinkles and age spots. If you want to look younger then wear a good sunscreen, put on a hat, and don’t try to tan.

6. Keep Your Skin Moist

Dry skin makes you look older, even if you’re healthy in every other way. So reach for a good moisturizer every day, and consider running a humidifier every night. Your skin will thank you!

If all of this seems overwhelming just start with some baby steps. Pick a single lifestyle change and practice it for 30 days until it becomes a habit. Then, move on to the next one. In one year you might just add a decade or more to your lifespan!
