February might just be our favorite month now. Not for Valentine’s Day, but because it’s Celebration of Chocolate Month!
So we thought we’d take a few minutes to talk about chocolate and your skin.
After all, chocolate still gets a pretty bad rap. People continue to blame chocolate for acne, for example.
But you can quite avoiding chocolate if you want to. Scientists have confirmed that there is no link between chocolate and acne.
Instead, there’s simply a link between sugar and acne. There’s also a link between sugar and wrinkles.
In fact, if you indulge in dark chocolate that’s lower in sugar and higher (at least 70%) in actual cocoa content then you might actually be helping your skin.
Dark chocolate helps combat beauty’s public enemy number one: Stress. Cocoa reduces hormones, which means less collagen breakdown in the skin, and fewer wrinkles.
Flavonols (the type of flavanoid found in chocolate) help your skin look its best. Flavanols are antioxidants that help protect your skin from UV damage (hello, fewer wrinkles) fight free radicals (so long, sun spots), and increase blood flow (i.e. dewy glow!).
In one study, flavanols in dark chocolate even improved skin hdyration and thickness–both mega-important for young looking skin.
So go ahead — dive into chocolate! While you don’t want to overdo it (portion control still matters) you’ll look better and feel better if you do, especially if you’re diligent about maintaining the rest of your skin care routine.
Guilt free chocolate? That’s something worth celebrating.
