In the past, dealing with arthritis has primarily been a matter of pain management. Once you got the condition it was probably with you for life.

However, all that may be changing. Irish researchers may have discovered a cure!

The researchers are using cells derived from body fat and injecting it into diseased joints to see how well it can regenerate the cartilage whose degeneration causes the pain of osteoarthritis.

“From the clinical trials conducted so far, we have seen the first signs of finding a cure for this truly incapacitating disease which affects so many. Using the patient’s own stem cells, we have been able to treat their diseased joints and relieve their suffering and burden of pain,” said Professor Frank Berry, scientific director of the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) at NUI Galway.

This is some truly amazing and hopeful research, though it will be some time before we see this therapy’s widescale availability in the United States. First, the treatment will have to be FDA-approved, which probably means many more clinical trials ahead.

Then, doctors will have to start making the treatment available on a widespread basis. Sometimes the spread of a new treatment can be very slow.

Still, arthritis patients have something to look forward to–a more permanent relief for their pain!
